Sunday 4 October 2026

Hello!
Welcome to our weekly newsletter in which we give you all the latest updates, key highlights, and a look at what’s coming up next.
This week, our members can head to the beautiful Hampstead Pagoda, attend an informative and empowering Women's Personal Safety talk, and enjoy a performance of the musical Jane Eyre at Southwark Playhouse Elephant. Tennis and Pickleball are now underway, and there are still a couple of places available for anyone wishing to join.
We are also delighted to announce that Emma Goldman has kindly agreed to take on the role of HWC Secretary. In addition, we have launched a new interest group, Mah Jong, which will be led by Shirmilla Julka. Members can already join the Mah Jong group through our WhatsApp Community, and further information will be added to our website as soon as playing sessions have been arranged.
We still have a few tickets available for our evening at The Comedy Store on 22 October and for The Standard of Living on 17 November. Do snap them up while you can.
Have a great week,
Joyce
P.S. Just a quick reminder: effective 1 October 2026, our annual membership fee is £60.

Book Club
London Falling by Patrick Raddon Keefe (383 pages)
19 October at 19:30
Members house in NW3.
Taken from Goodreads: ‘In the early morning of November 29th, 2019, surveillance cameras at the headquarters of MI6, Britain’s spy agency, captured video of a young man pacing back and forth on a high balcony of Riverwalk, a luxury tower on the bank of the river Thames. At 2:24 AM he jumped into the river.
In a quiet London neighborhood several miles away, Rachelle Brettler was worried about her son. Zac had told her that he had gone to stay with a friend, but then he did not come home. Days later, a police car pulled up and two officers relayed the dreadful news: her son was dead.
In their unbearable grief, Rachelle and her husband, Matthew, struggled to understand what had happened to Zac. He had his troubles, but in no way seemed suicidal. As they would soon discover, however, there was a lot they did not know about their son. Only after his death did they learn that he had adopted a fictitious alter-ego: Zac Ismailov, son of a Russian oligarch and heir to a great fortune. Under this guise, Zac had become entangled with a slippery London businessman named Akbar Shamji, and a murderous gangster known as “Indian Dave.” As the Brettlers set about investigating their son’s death, they were pulled into a different and more dangerous London than the one they’d always known, and came to believe that something much more nefarious than a suicide had claimed Zac’s life. But to their immense frustration, Scotland Yard seemed unable—or unwilling—to bring the perpetrators to justice.’

Chicks 'n Flicks
Sense & Sensibility
13 October, matinee
cinema tbc
The location and time will be announced on the website when cinemas post their showtimes We will meet in the foyer for a drink before hand.
An irresistible new take on Jane Austen's iconic Sense and Sensibility: a charming, witty, and deeply relatable story of love and sisterhood starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles.
Shot across genuine historic houses in Dorset, Knebworth, and Devon, this version leans fully into the scale and stiff-collared formality of the period while keeping Austen's wit intact. Expect embroidery-perfect frocks hiding some seriously messy feelings, and a film unafraid to let its heroines' hearts run just as loud as their heads.
Running Time: 2 hours 11 mins
Chicks 'n Flicks meets once a month to catch the latest blockbuster or an art house film at one of our local cinemas during the day. Please note, everyone will purchase their own ticket at the cinema.

Traitors Night
at Members house in NW3
7 November from 18:00 – 22:00
Tonight the house becomes a closed arena of strategy and suspicion. Everyone walks in as equals, but not everyone plays the same game. A few guests will be working quietly against the rest, blending in, listening closely, and steering conversations just enough to stay hidden.
Throughout the night, you’ll take part in challenges, make alliances that may or may not hold, and try to read the room without giving yourself away. No theatrics — just social deduction, sharp instincts, and the pressure of knowing someone is lying straight to your face. Stay alert. Pay attention to what people say… and what they don’t. By the end of the night, only the most perceptive players will still be standing.
Based on the popular TV show. Together with Highlights of London.
